Recordings made primarily by Tony Alderman of Galax, Va., Anglo- American, old-time fiddler and member of the Hillbillies and the Bucklebusters bands. Recordings are of old-time stringband and early country music, including the Galax Oldtime Fiddler's Convention, Galax, Va., from 1950 to 1967 (including instrumental, vocal, and dance contests); the Union Grove Fiddler's and Bluegrass Festival, Union Grove, N.C., from 1957 to 1970; dubs made of 78 rpm records of the Hillbillies and the Bucklebusters bands from the 1920s to the 1930s from Alderman's collection; and miscellaneous recordings of old-time music, including tapes recorded by Charlie Bowman, another member of the Hillbillies and the Bucklebusters bands, and by J. Lauren Johnson of Atlanta, Ga., a fiddler. Also included are interviews by folklorists Archie Green and Ed Kahn with old-time musicians, including Walter ("Sparkplug") Hughes, who performed with Alderman during the 1920s and 1930s.

Scholar and folklorist, Ed Kahn (1938-2004) spent much of his life devoted to the study of American folk songs and early country music, conducting extensive field research and writing at length about both Merle Travis and the Carter Family. Kahn was was involved in the creation of the John Edwards Memorial Foundation (JEMF), along with Archie Green, D.K. Wilgus, Fred Hoeptner, and Eugene Earle.
